Mandy Zelinka, lovely salon owner and stylist at 77 Salon in the Pearl recently hooked me up with some hair products to sample from her shop. I love Kevin Murphy's Angel Wash shampoo and Angel Rinse conditioner which are both formulated for protecting hair that has been colored and/or is dry and damaged. Each are lightly moisturizing and my dry mane has felt soft and stronger since using them.

The KM Angel products are intended for fine hair, so I I'd like to try the Luxury Wash and Rinse line next. I'm curious to find out if the Kevin Murphy products created for my hair thickness will work even better. This is hard to imagine after getting such good results from the Angel line. Perhaps my hair will become magical and emit actual light?

Another nice Kevin Murphy product sample that 77 Salon hooked me up with is Anti-Gravity. This is a volumizing styling aid that smells great and adds tons of shine without being oily or weighing your hair down. It makes my hair feel extremely strong and really helps to control the annoying frizz spots on my overworked locks.

Stop by 77 Salon to pick up these great products!

the Zelinka report at SALONNW.COM

Photobucket

IT IS OFTEN ASKED BY MY CLIENTS WHY MOST ‘HAIR MAGAZINES’ ARE SO POORLY DONE. I have to say, I stopped paying attention to these years ago, as television and pop culture magazines have really been dictating clients hair choices for years. One obvious example would be those sensational bangs that Reece Witherspoon sported a little over a year ago. These were very user friendly, and seemed to be the gateway drug to the sexy shaggy model bangs of today.bangs-for-salonnw

With ‘fringe fear’ gone from most people’s conscience thoughts, it is a welcome change to not only be able to have any age be adorned with them, so as to also save money on botox, but it is also a great to see it as a money saving style change. Most salons offer complimentary bang trims, so those full of fashion but cash poor can still stay true to the trends.

Given that popular media has been so influential for decades, we are currently in a peculiar situation. Those that have jobs are so busy they don’t have time to follow the trends, and those out of work can’t afford cable and trash mags. Insert myself, who ‘unfortunately’ has taken it upon herself to sit for a day, screening all of my DVR’d shows, and reading all the mags to bring it to you - fashion, a dish best served 24 hours a day and for free.

People; I give you the Zelinka report.

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A HAIR SNOB. I started judging people by their hair as a youngster. It drives my tv viewing, and as I have aged it has seeped into my music tastes. My Lily Allen obsession started when I kept seeing this wide eyed girl with heavy charcoal bangs. I was absolutely enthused to hear her, and that she failed to disappoint. Next came Zooey Deschanel, whom I love as an actress, and was stoked when her album came out and it rocked. zooey-d

I can’t say I think Kristen Cavallari (above), The Hills, has ever had much of a personality, but who knows? With that hot new cut she debuted in Nylon this month - maybe there is hope. (Although, my guess is that it’s a wig - boo.)

My first published write-up.

Photobucket

I must be getting old. I sit here reading Vivian McInerny's final blog and it brings a tear to my eye.
I had just started working at Aphrodite (now 77) coiffing hair, excited to finally have 'made it,' being downtown was the first step in my hair world domination. I sauntered into the back room and overheard Kenny (owner of the former LIT clothing store) talking about the ease of the press release. I yearned for recognition in my industry, and for him to talk so easily of how one could get press I thought, 'hey, why not me too?' Press releases weren't foreign to me, I was editor of the Benson High paper, just like my older sis, and also DJ'd on KBPS (K-Benson Polytechnic High School.)
I went straight home after getting done with work and put my press packet together. I had just done a photoshoot, so I threw in those pictures. Thinking back to my rudimentary approach I have to chuckle a little, thinking when Vivian received them she must have been a little amused with my presentation. Off my packet went.
No longer then 2 weeks later I received a call from Miss McInerny wanting a phone interview. I think the whole salon heard my squeal, and I tried my hardest to be witty and make her laugh, figuring this would set the memory of me in stone for her future reference. My photos were to be showcased in the annual Oregonian Holiday Hair layout.
Much to my 25 year old delight my pictures were bigger on the page then Greg Best, one of Portland's top Hair Stylists. I would enjoy a few more write-ups from Miss McInerny over the years, but alas, you never forget your first.
